Book a vision screening with the Benoni Lakes Lions Club

In 2016 the Benoni Lakes Lions purchased their own screener in order to be able to conduct screenings at companies, schools and other large groups.

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club is calling on companies, schools and large corporate groups to book a vision screening day with the club.

Beaulieu Maré, Benoni Lakes Lions Club spokesperson, said they can screen up to 300 people a day with the Spot Vision Screener, a portable device which takes only a few moments to screen eyes and provide a thorough and easy-to-read report.

The report reveals problems such as near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism and unequal fraction.

“The device can accurately detect vision issues in patients from six months old through to adults,” said Maré.

“It is a fast binocular screening process with a one-second capture time.”

Maré said the vision screenings are aimed at promoting eye care and detecting vision problems that could otherwise go unnoticed.

“By recommending a complete eye examination with professional conditions, problems can be detected and treated early and, in many instances, prevent further deterioration,” she said.

“It is important to note the screening does not replace a complete eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist but must be seen as an enhancement to detecting vision issues.”

She explained once the screening is done and the person can’t afford further help they are able to arrange a full eye testing at the Lions Operation Brightsight facility.

“We are also able to provided spectacles at an exceptionally low cost,” she said.

“The Spot Vision Screener was first introduced to Lions clubs in South Africa in 2011 by Nick Maré, who was the district governor at the time.

“He realised the benefit the screener could have in South Africa after having seen that most children in the United States of America are required to undergo vision screening numerous times during their school careers,” said Maré.

In 2016 the Benoni Lakes Lions purchased their own screener in order to be able to conduct screenings at companies, schools and other large groups.
