[LISTEN] International success by local film-maker

The Rynfield resident began his journey in film at the age of 16 when an interest in acting sparked his curiosity.

When thinking of blockbuster hit and movies that make international waves, more often than not Hollywood and the LA glitz and glam become a frame of immediate reference.

However, born and bred Benonian Renier Weideman is adding to the historic SA film industry by making his mark on the entertainment industry and has no intention of slowing down.

Not having studied at an institution but rather developing his skills by means of self-teaching, the multi-talented showbiz fundi is an inspiration to those around him.

Since then, the actor, director and producer has made international waves with the release of two of his most recent films.

These films, that were the product of Weideman’s capabilities from start to finish, have a gospel theme and have been distributed worldwide.

“When we were shooting the first film, Hartsbegeertes, the second film, Gebore Talente, was already developing in my mind,” said Weideman.

“Hartsbegeertes has been distributed in Australia, New Zealand and Holland.

“Gebore Talente is following suit and at the premiere held in April this year at a local church, we had a turnout of 2 500 people.”

Both films were the product of local cast members and were shot on familiar locations such as the Linmed Hospital and the Benoni CBD.

Along with his many professional achievements, Weideman married his long-term girlfriend Charlene and the couple, who are expecting their first born, are a powerhouse to contend with.

Charlene is responsible for the public relations aspects of Weideman’s career.

Also from Rynfield, Charlene said her husband is an inspiration to her.

“People think they need to go overseas to make it in the industry but you can actually do it in your hometown if you have a person like Renier to guide you along,” she beamed.

Despite achieving paramount success in the prime of his career, Weideman remains humble and encourages individuals to get on board in the entertainment industry.

“I have a passion for film-making and the concept of film as a whole,” he said.

“I’ve put 400 people on television thus far and Charlene and I are hoping to double that figure by next year.

“What people don’t realise sometimes is that community productions can be more powerful than cinema at times.

“I love identifying with the psychological aspects of characters and helping them come alive for actors.”

When asked if the couple would remain in Benoni they replied with an emphatic yes and noted Benoni is and will always be their home.
