[LISTEN/WATCH] Teachers making the world a better place

Teachers from the district were engaged in a day that focused on their importance in a successful education model.

World Teachers Day was celebrated in style by the Ekurhuleni North district on October 26.

The education enforcers showed up in their numbers, took a space on the field and pulled out their braai equipment to start a day of fun and excitement.

Although the day was celebrated globally on October 5, Ekurhuleni North District director Nonceba Ntuta ensured the festivities continued into the latter part of the month by inviting schools under her leadership to the event.

“All the schools in the district were invited to be here today,” said Ntuta.

“Teachers are the mothers of all professions.

“The vision and focus of our teachers need to be looked after and unfortunately, at times, they are not recognised as they should be.

“We need to celebrate them and I want to say thank you to the principals of the various schools today for being here with their teachers.”

Ntuta told the teachers that without them the world and all its professions would not be possible.

“Our value depends on you.

“A teacher’s role is to encourage, influence and enrich the person behind the face, colour, language, tradition and culture.”

She said that the right to education was the focus of 2018 and that the right to be a qualified teacher was also a factor to highlight.

“The right to train and qualify teachers needs to be embedded in the 2018 theme.

“Teachers’ rights also need to be considered and decent working conditions with adequate remuneration are fundamental to these rights.”

Ntata urged the teachers to do a self-introspection.

“You have an impact on individuals, government, business and societies as a whole.

“Practice what you preach and teach as you are involved in a legacy of lifelong learning.”

Pastor Adrian Jacobs of Siloam Ministries was present on the day to provide a motivational word to the teachers.

“You are the destiny shapers,” he said when addressing the crowd.

“You are the king and queen makers and you are greater than what you ever thought possible.”

Physical health and wellbeing were also on the agenda as the teachers participated in various exercises with the district director joining in.

The formalities were concluded when those present joined hands and stood in solidarity while singing to “Heal the World” by the late Michael Jackson.

Some of the schools present on the day included Hoërskool Brandwag, the Belvedere school, Benoni High School, Actonville Primary School, Arbor Primary School and Kempton Park Primary School.
