Business robbed of goods worth R2.5-million in Benoni CBD

Police are investigating.

A case of business robbery was opened at the Benoni Police Station after a cash and carry store in the Benoni CBD was robbed of around R2.5-million worth of goods on November 1.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said it is alleged that one of the workers entered a bathroom at around 11pm when he was approached by four men and one pointed a firearm at him.

According to Sekele, all four men were armed.

“They then took him out of the bathroom, searched him and took his cellphone, wallet and the store keys,” said Sekele.

“The suspects allegedly took the victim to open the main entrance door for their approximately more than 20 accomplices to gain entry.”

Sekele said the accomplices walked in with the construction workers who were outside. They ordered all the workers to lie down and demanded their cellphones.

“The construction workers were ordered by the suspects to help them to load the goods into an eight-ton truck,” she explained.

“As they were loading the goods, they locked the rest of the workers in one of the offices.”

Sekele said it is alleged that other suspects were outside the store with riffles.

Suspects fled the scene. No arrests made or injuries reported.
