Department responds to alleged school beard incident

The City Times contacted the Department of Education regarding the alleged incident.

In an incident reported on October 23, Ashton International College allegedly ordered a Muslim learner at the school to shave off his beard, despite the beard being part of his religious beliefs.

After confirming a visit to the school on October 25, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education Steve Mabona responded with the following:

“We can confirm that GDE officials visited the school and after that, it was agreed a further meeting will be held on October 30 with the parents of the affected learner and school authorities.”
