Local making waves in the hair industry

All things hair with Afriberry

They say a woman’s hair is her crown and for Relebohile Moeng this has become her livelihood.

The former Daveyton resident started Afri-berry in 2011 after a tragic accident left her with 150 stitches to her face.

After being told that the only solution would be plastic surgery, Moeng did research on organic skin products.

The 38-year-old describes herself as an agro-processing manufacturer for organic skin and hair care products.

Moeng has been nominated for Hair & Beauty Entrepreneur of 2018 in the Africa Hair Awards.

BCT: How do you feel about being nominated?

RM: I’m ecstatic and feel very honoured that I have been nominated.

I am hoping that South Africans will vote for me and that I will win, but if I do not, just the nomination and recognition is the fuel that will carry me for years to come.

BCT: What other awards or nominations have you received since starting Afri-berry?

RM: In 2014, 2015 and 2016, The Ekurhuleni metro awarded me the Best Empowerment Partner on Youth Empowerment.

In 2015, I was the winner of the African Corporate Excellence Awards (Best Hair & Beauty – Africa)

In the year 2016, I got numerous awards such as the Acquisition International (Most Outstanding Beauty Products), Acquisition International (Africa’s Most Innovative Brand), the African Hair Awards (Most Innovative Brand) and I was a Green Awards, Pure Beauty Awards Finalist.

BCT: Should you win what would that mean to you?

RM: I will be extremely happy because this would give me a platform to share our African experience (as Afri-berry), knowledge of Africa’s natural bounty and our heritage with the world. Also, to give back to this wonderful continent we have lived in for generations.

BCT: How do you manage to stay ahead of your competitors?

RM: Afri-berry invests in modern day research relating to African skin and hair products.

Meeting the customer’s expectations, improving our processes through the use of innovative ideas and using the finest natural ingredients sourced all over Africa.

This we do through not only our technologically advanced extraction, processing, purification and production methods but also through constant research into consumer trends and keeping up to date with the ethnic-botanic discoveries and applications.

BCT: How do you get recognition for such an award?

RM: Through community work performed by the Afri-berry team around Ekurhuleni and surpassing end-user expectations with regards to Afri-berry’s 100 per cent organic products.

BCT: What does the competition entail and how do people vote for you?

RM: The awards give recognition to professionals, brands, organisations and individuals who have and continue to play a vital role in the African Hair Industry and voting will start after October 5.

The awards will be held at the ICC in Durban on December 13.
