Listen: Golf day held for Chi-Nelri brings in thousands for her treatment

The little girl was excited about the day and shared a few words with the City Times

A golf day fund-raiser for two-year-old Chi-Nelri Smith took place on August 29 and raised around R200 000 for the little Petit girl’s treatment.

Chi-Nelri has a cholesterol count of 26 and her condition, known as familial hypercholesterolaemia, is characterised by higher than normal levels of low-density lipoprotein (unhealthy) blood cholesterol in the body.

The golf day was organised by the Music Bugs Nursery School in a bid to raise the money needed for Chi-Nelri’s treatments.

Her sister, Von-Veve (7), also suffers from a similar condition but has a cholesterol count of nine which, currently, is more manageable than Chi-Nelri’s condition.

Medical experts advised that while the condition cannot be cured, it is treatable but may require Chi-Nelri to have a liver transplant in the future.

Owner of the Music Bugs Corné Scheepers said she has had a special relationship with both Chi-Nelri and Von-Veve as the girls grew up and attended the school with their mom, Chivon, teaching at the school.

“My first priority is to always make sure all the children at the school are loved.

“Chi-Nelri is no different and I consider her one of my own, as I’ve known her since birth.

“It was a huge shock to us when we found out she was diagnosed with the condition,” Corné said.

She explained that Chi-Nelri’s condition made her feel as though there was a second person inside of the child, making her sick.

“On the outside, she is full of life and active just like any other child her age.

“While we do have to handle her with care, we also want Chi-Nelri to feel normal so she also has to say ‘please and thank you’ and go about everyday life like the other children do,” said Corné.

Chivon said, on behalf of the family, that they would like to express their gratitude to the Music Bugs Nursery School for arranging the golf day.

“Corné is a great friend and we can’t thank her enough for putting this event together.

“Chi-Nelri’s grans, our family and friends and the previous and existing parents from the Music Bugs all helped and we feel so blessed by their contributions.

“Thank you to the public for every prayer said for our little girl and we are just grateful to God for keeping our daughters healthy enough to be here today,” said Chivon.
