Watch/Listen: Vikings came to town with Viking boat launch

The idea of a building a Viking boat came to him and within seven weeks the boat was complete in his backyard.

The ‘Viking King’, as Daniel Bungay of Farrarmere has become known as in Benoni, launched his Viking boat at Homestead Dam on September 1.

Bungay, who has been a corporate trainer for over 20 years, said he noticed training and corporate events had become stale and so decided to give teambuilding a facelift of his own.

“Work teams will be able to enjoy a day filled with Viking activities and a row on the lake afterwards.

“It’s going to be a vehicle for creating relations and bonds,” Bungay said.

After a successful test launch on August 18, the official launch was all systems go.

The boat, officially named The Nordic Sea, is, according to Bungay, a representation of warrior belief and strength.

Crowds gathered to witness the spectacle as Bungay shared his love and enthusiasm for the Viking age.

He explained to visitors he firmly believes there is something great in every individual – just as there was a boat inside of him he was unaware of.

The Nordic Sea, which stands at a height of 2.5m and a length of 6.7m, was the main attraction at the Viking village set up on the day.

The village comprised of food and beverage stands, Viking arts and crafts (shields, swords and other traditional gear) and a variety of other goodies, like soaps and body creams.

Individuals who shared in Bungay’s vision for the day dressed to impress for the occasion.

The successful launch of the boat on Homestead waters attracted scores of people who delighted in the marvel that floated before them.

A first in Benoni and a first on the continent, The Nordic Sea will be used as part of Bungay’s corporate training initiatives as he previously mentioned to the City Times.
