Guilds celebrate 75th and 20th anniversaries on Women’s Day

Guilds celebrate 75 years of existence

The Trefoil Guild celebrated its 75th anniversary and the Benoni Guild its 20th anniversary on Women’s Day (August 9).

Both organisations gathered at Blue Forest in Rynfield and the event was attended by members of the North-East and Randburg guilds, Wilro Park Black Eagles, Kwatsaduza Guild and the Benoni Guild.

Members also had the privilege of being joined by the chief commissioner of Girl Guides South Africa, Sizeka Rensburg, deputy chief commissioner Lindiwe Ximlya and the National Trefoil Guild president, Tina Eddy.

“This is beyond our own doing,” said Rensburg.

“An idea came to someone and through resilience and determination the club has made a difference in the lives of girls for 75 years.”

Rensburg continued to say that she still used one good turn a day as her daily motto throughout her life.

“The institution is rich in people, skills and capabilities,” she said.

“A unique advantage that the organisation has is its inter-generational approach to the Girl Guides movement, which is made up of strong women.”

The theme for the event was “Call Back the Past”, which Rensburg interpreted as going back to basics.

“I learn something from you that I can pass onto the next generation; we learn from those who have been here before,” she said

The Benoni Guild meets on the third Saturday of each month.

“This club is open to anybody who has been previously connected to the guides and someone who is willing to take the guide promise,” said Barbara Hayward.

The club alternates between outings and home-based events with a guest speaker who teaches members a new skill.

According to Hayward, the guilds assist the Girl Guides whenever they need help and raise money for good turns.

“The club is about service, fun, friendship and loyalty and being supportive of each other,” said Hayward.
