Benonians can be proud of this achievement.

Ten out of 16 schools from The Ekurhuleni Children’s Choir are from Benoni and recently brought home the gold award.

“The Ekurhuleni Children’s Choir recently participated in the 10th World Choir Games which is the world’s largest choir competition,” said Christine Dercksen, the artistic director.

“This event was held in Africa for the first time and took place from July 4 to 14 in Tshwane.”

The choir is a regional choir representing 16 schools from Ekurhuleni and has been making waves since 2005.

According to Dercksen, 300 choirs from 60 countries with 16 000 choristers took part in this international event.

“The Ekurhuleni Children’s Choir entered in the open section for Children’s Choirs and received a gold award,” she explained.

Not only did the choir make Ekurhuleni proud, they also practice at die Gereformeerde Kerk Benoni in Miles Sharp Street, which makes Benonians proud.

“The choir takes part in concerts, choir festivals and church performances,” Dercksen said.

“They also undertook three overseas tours of Europe in 2008, 2011 and 2013.”

They will be performing again on August 19 with a Canadian Youth Choir at the St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Soweto.
