Fire in Benoni South Industrial Area

This is a developing story

Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi confirmed that a fire broke out at the Leicester Road Recycling Plant in the Benoni South industrial area this morning (August 2), at around 10.30am.

According to a business owner in the area, the fire broke out as the result of copper and scrap metal were being illegally burned on the property.

The business owner, who wished to remain anonymous, told the City Times that there are no fire hydrant points for emergency services on the street and that is a risk to all businesses in the area.

At the time of publishing firefighters on scene had contained the blaze.

The City Times is on the scene and will report further on this story.
