Lakefield pub murder sees accused handing himself over to police

The suspect in the murder of a Boksburg man who died from injuries sustained during an altercation at a Lakefield pub on July 26 was granted R5 000 bail when he appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on August 1 and the case was postponed to September 27.

Accused Gideon Fourie (22) reportedly handed himself over to police on July 30 in connection with the case.

Daniel Botha (26) died from injuries he sustained after a fight broke out at the pub, according to Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele.

“Botha was taken to hospital with head injuries,” said Sekele.

“The hospital alerted the police and a case of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened at the Benoni SAPS on July 26.

“The charge was amended to murder when Botha died of his injuries in hospital on July 29.

“Police are awaiting the post mortem results to determine the cause of death,” Sekele concluded.

A memorial service for Botha was held in Boksburg on August 2.
