Support group for prostate cancer patients

The support group caters for any cancer patients, survivors and caregivers in the East Rand.

In celebration of Mandela Day, the CanSurvive Support Group launched a prostate cancer support group at the Oasis of Life Family Church in Daveyton on July 18.

Ronnie Nkabinde, a CanSurvive executive committee member, said there was a need in the East Rand where patients can share their experiences and concerns and obtain support and useful information from others who have been through similar experiences.

“We also have a buddy support system where patients can interact with and receive advice and support from cancer survivors who often have a similar profile, disease and treatment protocol,” said Nkabinde.

Dr Ben Montoedi, one of the resident doctors at the Oasis of Life Family Church, said they partnered with CanSurvive as one of their socio-economic development initiatives.

Montoedi addressed the patients on what steps can be taken once you’ve been diagnosed with cancer.

He said it is important for men to know that early detection of cancer greatly increases the chances for successful treatment.

At every meeting held there will be different guest speakers such as doctors, dieticians, occupational therapists, laughter therapists and physiotherapists who will address the patients.

The CanSurvive Support Group was founded in 2009 with the aim of providing support for cancer patients, caregivers and friends at various levels, no matter what type of cancer they are affected by and where they receive their treatment.

The men received breakfast and lunch on the day.

The next meeting will be held in August.

The support group is looking to provide support in other East Rand areas such as KwaThema (Springs) and Tsakane (Brakpan). Anyone interested in being part of this initiative can call 062 275 6193 or email cansurvive@icon.co.za
