U3A hosts lecture at Northfield Methodist Church

Rashilla Francis of the SOS Children's Village presented the group with food for thought by asking what would have happened if the late Nelson Mandela was not given the chance or opportunity to lead the nation.

The University of the Third Age (U3A) in Benoni invited guest speaker Rashilla Francis from the SOS Children’s Village to present a lecture to the group on Tuesday (July 17).

U3A is an international group that provides cultural, educational and social activities for semi-retired and retired individuals within communities.

The U3A in Benoni convenes once a month at the Northfield Methodist Church.

Guest speakers are often invited to share insights and information on various topics.

Francis, who is a National Legacy liaison officer from the Pietermaritzburg village in KwaZulu-Natal shared a message of “opportunities and chances” with the group.

In the same week that the Nelson Mandela centenary was commemorated, Francis reminded the group of the importance the late former president emphasized on children.

There are currently eight villages in South Africa and each village houses between 75 to 162 children.

Every village has homes that have six children who belong to one SOS mother.

Although no biological ties exist between SOS mother and child, the children are engaged in a conventional family experience.

The U3A has various classes in place that include crochet, knitting and basic computer skills classes.

Elderly members of the community are encouraged to join the group.
