UPDATE: Tom Jones reopened: Incident seemingly linked to robbery of a courier van

The three men are detained at the Benoni Police Station.

The EMPD Swat Unit arrested three men for attempted robbery at the Tom Jones Street off-ramp this morning (July 23) at around 8.40am.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said police received a tip-off that a courier truck was going to be robbed.

“The vehicle shadowing the courier vehicle was then closely monitored by the EMPD,” said Kgasago.

“On the Tom Jones Street off-ramp, three occupants in a gold Honda Civic SUV approached the truck and were immediately cornered, halted and arrested by the metro police officers.”

Kgasago said preliminary investigations revealed that one of the suspects has 24 outstanding criminal cases and is wanted for failing to appear in court on several occasions.

“It is believed the trio had accomplices in another vehicle which disappeared when realising their partners in crime were being intercepted by the metro police,” he said.

No firearms were found on the arrested suspects.

The Honda SUV was confiscated and taken to the SAPS Van Ryn pound in Benoni for further investigations.

The three men are being detained at Benoni Police Station and will appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.
