Youngsters learn how to sew in Brentwood Park

Developing skills to lead to better opportunities

The Influencing Children and Youth (ICY) and Country Life Retirement Village hosted a workshop on July 11 in Brentwood Park.

The workshop was attended by 17 children from Kids Haven and various homes in Boksburg.

Residents of the village taught the children how to knit and crochet.

The venue, knitting and crochet needles, wool and lunch were all sponsored on the day.

This is the second workshop hosted by the organisation, the first one took place last year during the July school holidays.

Vanessa Carelse, a social worker from ICY said they hoped to continue hosting these workshops every year.

“The aim is to teach the youth new skills and help them generate an income, which then becomes pocket money,” said Carelse.

Speaking to one of the girls who were there, she said she enjoyed being there and that the ladies were kind, patient and understanding.

Carelse said the workshops innovate and aspire young girls and help them to grow both physically and mentally.

ICY is a non-profit organisation that focuses on abused and neglected children between the ages of nine and 17 years.

The organisation runs camping, mentorship programmes and skills development programmes for teenagers that have no formal schooling.

ICY also provides food, clothing and other basic needs to families and communities who are in need.
