Student wants Daveyton residents to donate blood

Donate and help save a life

A Daveyton student, currently studying at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), is planning to educate his community about the importance of blood donation.

Thabang Matsi explained that the Igaz’Lam (my blood) initiative wants to spread the word through various community events about why people should donate blood, and will also be hosting blood drives with the SANBS’ Benoni branch.

“Donating blood is pivotal to the success of the 2020 World Health Organisation goals,” he said.

“Igaz’Lam was founded earlier this year and aims to reach out to the Daveyton community through education to encourage residents to donate blood regularly.

“We need to ensure that we break the misconceptions some township dwellers have about donating blood.”

The initiative stems from a community project Bachelor of Arts Strategic Communications honours students at UJ have been tasked with.

“I chose blood donation because I’m a regular donor and am concerned about the fact that many members of my community, Daveyton, don’t know much about donating or about the important work of the SANBS,” Matsi said.

Dates are yet to be finalised for the blood drives, which are planned for late July/early August.
