Apply for indigent status

Ekurhuleni residents can now apply for indigent status

Following the approval of the reviewed Indigent Policy, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni has encouraged community members who meet the qualifying criteria to apply.

According to Ward 29 councillor Haseena Ismail, the reviewed Indigent Policy gives tenants of council-owned property an opportunity to register for indigent status where council housing rental sock and services account is held by approved occupants.

According to Ismail, for this financial year, Ekurhuleni has budgeted for around 135 000 registered indigents.

“With the high rate of unemployment and retrenchments, the Indigent Policy helps to give relief to those approved households,” she said.

The revised policy entitles indigent registered homes 9kl free water, 50 kWh of electricity, 9kl sanitation and free waste removal equivalent to a residential once a week service.

Ismail said the new inclusions to the policy will give tenants the same opportunity as all other residents and allow them a chance at dignity.

It will also ensure that our senior citizens are not marginalised.

“We encourage those individuals who meet the qualifying criteria to actively register so that they can be assessed,” she said.
