Benoni SPCA offers guidelines to consider when acquiring pets for children

Want a pet for your child? Consider this before making that all important decision.

The Benoni SPCA maintains that caring for animals is a responsibility and privilege only an adult has or can oversee.

Listed below are a few considerations the SPCA has outlined for adults when getting a pet for a child:

• Will the child remember to feed the animal and ensure water accessibility every day?

• Is the child able to recognise illnesses or diseases in animals?

• Will the child handle the animal correctly?

• Is the child familiar with the needs of an exotic animal?

This includes reptiles, birds, rodents, amphibians and arthropods.

This comes after the Benoni SPCA confiscated four dogs and a domestic rat from a Brentwood Park home last week (July 4).

The Inspectorate received a public complaint and was witness to the poor living conditions the animals were living in.

Conditions animals were living in

When questioned about the state the animals were being forced to live in, the owner said that it was his children’s responsibility to take care of the pets.
