The Ekurhuleni metro has reopened its dumping sites to the public while a service provider clears refuse dumped outside by the public since July 2.
“The metro wishes to apologise for the inconvenience caused in rendering this service,” said EMM spokesperson, Themba Gadebe.
Mini-dumping sites across Ekurhuleni were closed, apparently because the metro failed to renew tender contracts for these sites on time.
Ward 23 councillor André du Plessis described the current state of affairs as extremely serious, citing bad planning and inefficiency as the cause.

He added that Ekurhuleni is becoming a “trashopolis” and that the waste department is in a crisis.
Du Plessis, who is also the DA shadow MMC for Environmental and Waste Management, said the dump sites are being closed because the tender for the contractors expired on July 1.
Gadebe said they are working on the issue at hand.
“Indeed, this resulted in waste spread on the ground but the metro has since deployed a contractor to clean up the area and deal with the backlog,” he said.
