New presidents for Benoryn and Benoni van Rhyn

The 2018/2019 theme for the club is “Kindness Matters”.

It was a day filled with mixed emotions as the Benoni van Rhyn Lions Club bid farewell to the outgoing president and welcomed the incoming president on June 23 at a function in Western Extension.

Although the club bid farewell to Peter van der Heiden and welcomed Vivien Hassett, they also bid farewell to Benoryn outgoing president Leslie Young and, with a giggle, welcomed her back again as the incoming president.

Janis van der Heiden did a sterling job as MC of the function, entertaining guests with a few jokes before starters were served.

She told guests the club had donated about R113 000 and hosted many projects over the year, such as the nicotine, youth and hunger projects.

“One thing I am proud of is the relationship we have with the Benoryn club,” said van der Heiden.

Young called the 2017/2018 year busy and rewarding.

“We contributed towards prescription glasses, school uniforms, a Jojo tank in Etwatwa and donated blankets,” she said.

“Our membership is also stable.”

Hassett said she joined the club because she found people who genuinely care about the community.

“This is a family – by choice,” she said.

“Of course we rumble at times, but we get the job done.”

Hassett said the 2018/2019 theme is “Kindness Matters”.

“Our arms reach far and wide. Be proud to be a lion and encourage your friends to join,” she said.

Young spoke again as the incoming president and said this year the aim is to make a bigger difference.
