DA calls for metro to address conditions at Daveyton Hostel

The Democratic Alliance (DA) will be tabling a motion in council to call on the Ekurhuleni metro to address residents’ concerns at Daveyton Hostel and to immediately provide them with an action plan to rehabilitate the hostel.

On June 13, the DA caucus in Ekurhuleni took to the streets of Daveyton as part of an ongoing conversation with communities known as ‘people’s dialogues’.

PR councillor in Ekurhuleni Mathew Cuthbert said that during the tour he and the Ekurhuleni caucus leader, Clr Phillip de Lange, visited the Daveyton Hostel to engage with the residents about the issues and challenges they are facing.

“What we found when we entered the hostel left us in utter shock and dismay,” Cuthbert said.

“We were greeted by appalling living conditions that the residents of the hostel are forced to live in.

“Infested by rodents, sewerage leaks and piles of waste, the immediate health concerns are clearly evident.

“When we entered some of the units, the buildings were severely dilapidated, ridden with water leaks and crumbling infrastructure.

“Clearly, maintenance has not taken place for a number of years.

“More concerning was the fact that there had been little or no attempt by the metro to step in and assist with maintenance.

“While we are 24 years into the democratic dispensation, the residents of Daveyton Hostel are still forced to live under apartheid-like conditions.

“We must remember that these hostels were used to house migrant labourers from the old Bantustans, yet there has been no attempt to convert these into liveable and dignified accommodation for families.”
