Still awaiting coal mine decision

Rumours prove false, but another meeting will be held.

Rumours were brought to the City Times’ attention recently that Bheka Masinga Global’s intention to test for coal deposits in the Benoni area is going ahead.

However, the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) has denied this.

“An application was lodged in November 2017,” a response from the DMR stated.

“It is still in the process and, as such, no final decision has been taken on the matter.”

Earlier this year, the City Times reported that a preliminary Basic Assessment Report (BAR) was to be submitted to
the DMR by Bheka Masinga Global and the company confirmed it is prospecting to mine coal in 6 108.9 hectares close to Benoni.

According to the company, the area is located about 15.26km north-east of the Kempton Park CBD, 22km south-west of Delmas and two kilometres south-west of Bapsfontein.

EMM spokesperson, Themba Gadebe said there was a meeting organised to take place on May 6 pertaining to public participation in terms of Petroleum Resources, Development Act, 2002, (Act no 28 of 2002) for the DMR process.

“The meeting was cancelled and it was agreed that another meeting will be arranged,” he said.

“A meeting has now been set for June 30 2018.”

The City Times is awaiting comment from the DMR about when a final decision will be made.
