Clampdown on illegal mining

The operation started at 8.30am and ran through to 2pm.

Combined police units swooped on an informal settlement on Golden Drive on June 20 as part of a police clampdown on illegal mining.

Members of the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster were joined in the raid by EMPD officers, EMPD Equestrian Unit and cluster patrollers.

The operation started at 8.30am and ran through to 2pm.

The police seized a variety of illegal mining equipment, including about 50 pendukas and explosives, and 23 people were arrested.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele, said the aim of the operation was to put a stop to illegal mining in the area following the recent killings of illegal miners.

The operation will be on-going.
