Delayed roadworks in Pretoria Road causing businesses a headache

How much longer until road works are complete asked Pretoria road business owner.

Roadworks on a section of Pretoria Road have caused concern for business owners at a nearby shopping centre who claim to have lost business as a result of the delay in finishing the construction.

One business owner, Jerry Cindi said he was told by the contractor that the roadworks would be completed by the end of May, but this was not the case.

“This has been going on since mid-March and my business is being affected badly,” he said.

“I don’t understand what’s happening.”

Cindi said business has dropped by 40 per cent and he still has to pay rent.

“Business needs to carry on, especially on weekends, but customers can’t come here because there is nowhere to park,” he said.

The business owner said he is surviving because of his regular customers who know the quality of his food.

Cindi said he asked the contractor about the delay to which the contractor replied he did not have enough building material.

According to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, the roadworks are currently in phase four of implementation, which involves the section between Raeburn and Robinson streets.

Gadebe said the roadworks are scheduled to be complete by June 30.

The contractor may, however, need an extra week, up until July 6, to asphalt the surface layer and complete road markings.

According to the Gadebe, the contractor initially struggled to purchase materials, but recently the material is being delivered on a daily basis.

The contractor’s shifts are 7am to 5pm on weekdays and on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm, however, this may be extended to 4pm if necessary.

Gadebe said there are 19 people employed on site, including seven plant operators.

He said visible construction signage is in place on the road to alert oncoming traffic about construction in progress and lanes to be used.

“All existing traffic signals are in operation and all open trenches barricaded.”
