Making a difference this winter

The aim was to give back to the community.

The Crystal Park police recently joined hands with CPF members and staff from a local business to give about 500 people a warmer winter this year with the donation of blankets.

The project was received with warm hearts at the Sayidinah Bilal Masjid in Crystal Park and through parts of Daveyton on June 3.

The initiative, called Brite Blanket Drive, was sparked when Joel Baziwaane thought about his struggles when coming to South Africa and how he has grown since.

Baziwaane shared his dream to help others with his colleagues, Waseem and Suhail Bhana, at Brite Lighting and Electrical, and together the three set out to make the blanket drive a success.

“I was asked who would be the people to give the blankets too and this is when I involved the Crystal Park police,” said the chairperson of the masjid, Sulaiman Shai.

Shai then made contact with Crystal Park SAPS spokesperson Constable Lerato Mopeli who, with her team at the Social Crime Prevention Unit, visited the N12 informal settlement to identify unemployed, needy residents.

“It was not an easy task but we managed to identify people who could benefit from the blanket drive,” she said.

“We asked them to come to the masjid to each collect one.

“The iThemba Rape and Trauma Centre also gave an educational talk and we educated the public about domestic violence and crime in the area.”
