Birch Road taxi commuters be aware

Police are urging victims of this gang to come forward and report what happened to them.

The Crystal Park police are warning taxi commuters to be vigilant following a number of robbery cases which have been reported since the beginning of the month.

Spokesperson Sergeant Lerato Mopeli said the incidents involve a white Quantum taxi transporting commuters in Benoni Small Holdings and surrounding areas.

“Most of the time the taxi picks up commuters along Birch Road in the afternoon,” said Mopeli.

“It is alleged that there are three men in the taxi and one of them has a firearm.”

Mopeli said the modus operandi is that once a commuter is inside the taxi, a short while later one of the men pulls out a firearm, assaults and robs them of their belongings before dropping them off along the road.

“We urge commuters to be vigilant and females especially should avoid getting into a taxi in this area on their own. “Women should preferably commute in groups.”

No arrests have yet been made and the police are urging victims of this gang to come forward and report what happened to them.
