25 injured in a collision of 23 vehicles in Etwatwa

There were no fatalities.

At least 25 people were injured when a collision involving 23 vehicles occurred on the N12 in Etwatwa near Benoni this afternoon.

“At approximately 4.30pm, paramedics from ER24 and various other services attended the scene which was described as ‘chaotic’,” said ER24 spokesperson, Wener Vermaak.

“Rescuers found several vehicles and debris scattered across the highway.”

Vermaak said at least one truck was involved in the collision.

“Rescuers went from vehicle to vehicle to determine the injuries to occupants,” he explained.

“Most of the occupants sustained minor to moderate injuries.”

However, Vermaak said a child, believed to be five years old, was found in one of the vehicles with serious injuries.

“ER24 paramedics stabilised the child on scene and called for an emergency helicopter to airlift the child to hospital,” he said.

“Fortunately, there were no fatalities on the scene; rescuers stated that they were amazed that most people sustained only minor injuries.”

According to Vermaak, the exact circumstances of the incident are not yet known but local authorities attended the scene and will conduct an investigation.
