Metro must do more about ongoing power cuts in Benoni

DA suggests solutions for power issues.

DA ward councillor Haseena Ismail said the Department of Energy is not doing enough to ensure uninterrupted power supply to Benoni residents.

This statement comes as a result of residents from Wards 24, 27 and 73 being subjected to continued power outages.

“During the past week, residents have had to endure power outages on three consecutive days,” she said.

“On May 21, power was interrupted for almost four hours in the evening. Power was off for three hours on Tuesday and about two hours on Wednesday morning.”

Ismail said the residents and herself have reported and escalated this matter in all possible ways, including to the Ekurhuleni call centre and escalated it to the Department of Energy.

“Residents have to wait hours before power is restored and once the power is restored, illegal connections resume almost immediately from the informal settlement,” Ismail said.

“The constant excuse from the Ekurhuleni metro is that the energy department does not have sufficient after-hours electricians.

“Whose fault is that?

“This is another example of incompetent departments within the metro and how their incompetency is ultimately at the detriment of innocent residents.”

Ismail also put forward her suggestions for the metro to improve electrical infrastructure:

• Attend to old and ailing electrical infrastructure throughout the metro.

• Plan ahead for winter months as the demand for energy is higher.

• Improve energy maintenance programmes and sufficient electricians to assist with the restoration of power after normal working hours.

The City Times is awaiting a response from the metro.
