Lions challenge others to also help Benoni Child Welfare

Other organisations are being challenged to lend a helping hand.

The Benoni van Rhyn Lions Club donated food worth R5 000 to Benoni Child Welfare on May 22.

This comes after the Greater Benoni Child Welfare closed their doors due to the Department of Social Development’s (DSD) subsidy non-payment.

On Monday (May 21), social workers from the organisation held a peaceful protest outside the Department of Social Development (DSD) offices in New Modder Road.

Due to non-payment Benoni Child Welfare shuts down

When City Times spoke to Elsie Labuschagne, Greater Benoni Child Welfare director, she said none of the child welfare organisations in Gauteng has been paid.

“The staff didn’t get paid in April, and they won’t get paid next week,” said Labuschagne.

Labuschagne said this impacts the day-to-day running of the centre.

“We have used up most of our reserves,” she said.

“How will I feed the kids? I can’t sleep at night.”

Labuschagne said they have been using money they get from their charity shop and some of their savings to help with the day-to-day running of the centre.

Viv Hassett of the Benoni van Rhyn Lions Club said after they heard the news about the non-payment they had to lend a helping hand.

“We donated the food to help them get through this difficult time. We are also challenging the public and other service organisations to also come forward and assist Benoni Child Welfare,” she said.

Colin House social worker Waseela Ally said they thank the Benoni van Rhyn Lions Club members for their donation.

“It’s good to know that there are people who still care and are willing to help us in our time of need.”
