Beware of SIM swap scam

Anyone who has been scammed or has information regarding this scam is urged to contact the police.

The Actonville police are warning community members to be aware of a sim scam currently doing the rounds.

Captain Pheello Mothapo, Actonville SAPS spokesperson, said that in this scam, a person pretending to be a call centre agent from a network service provider contacts a customer and requests their security details.

“The scammers tell the victims that their number has been blocked by the system and they need their Puk number to unblock it,” said Mothapo.

“Once they have all the details they need from the victim, the scammers use this to perform a fraudulent SIM swap. “They then access the victim’s banking details and they withdraw money from their bank account.”

Residents are urged not to respond to unsolicited phone calls and to not give their personal information to unknown people.

Anyone who has been scammed or has information regarding this scam should contact the Actonville SAPS on 011 964 6000 or Crimestop on 08600 10111.
