Farrarmere resident was metres from suspects’ vehicle when shooting started

Motorists are urged to use alternative routes.

Police have arrested five suspects in connection with the cash in transit heist on the corner of Atlas and North Rand roads at around 9.30am this morning (May 17), during which two CIT vans were targeted.

The suspects were arrested at the George Goch Hostel in Jeppestown.

Farrarmere resident Leon van der Merwe told the City Times on the scene that he witnessed two suspects in a silver BMW shooting at the CIT vehicles.

He was driving about 600m behind the BMW at the time.

“They then planted explosives on the vehicles and the vehicles exploded,” van der Merwe said.

“The suspects grabbed bags from the cash vehicles and fled the scene.”

SAPS provincial spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said it is alleged suspects in four vehicles shot at the two CIT vehicles and then used explosives to blow the vehicles up.

One security guard sustained head injuries and another leg injuries and both were transported to hospital for treatment.

Forensic investigators comb the scene.

Masondo said more than ten suspects were involved in the heist.

Police recovered a rifle and one vehicle.

The police are searching for the other suspects and said it is unclear when the road will be reopened to traffic.
