Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said police were called to the scene and upon arrival they found a group of people surrounding the two men.

“When police questioned community members, they allege that the duo was accused of a robbery that was committed at Alliance, near Modderbee, in the morning,” said Sekele.

“It is alleged that the two men were chased by the residents of Alliance and were found hiding in the informal settlement.”

“Community members and the residents of Alliance assaulted the two men with different objects,” said Sekele.

One of the men died on the scene and the other was taken to Far East Rand Hospital.

Sekele said they are appealing to community members to report crime and not to take the law into their own hands.

“People must know that by doing so they are also committing a crime, which can lead to them being arrested.”

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster commander Maj Gen Poobalan Subbiah condemned the attack on the two men.

A case of murder and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened at the Daveyton Police Station.
