UPDATE: Crystal Park crematorium reopens

The crematorium was temporarily closed on January 26.

The crematorium at the Lala Ngoxolo Cemetery in Crystal Park reopened this morning (May 7), according to the Ekurhuleni metro.

The metro temporarily closed the crematorium on January 26 due to serious technical issues with the newly installed cremators.

Ward 24 councillor Kabelo Mahonko said the newly installed cremators posed health and safety concerns.

“After the closure, the matter was investigated in conjunction with our project management team and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and their sub-contractor MacroTech,” she said.

Issues the metro identified included lack of ventilation, gas leaks, non-insulated stacks, jammed door wheels and the door not sealing properly.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadeba said following a thorough inspection by the contractor appointed to install and service the cremators, work was completed on May 2 and the facility is now again ready for service.

“Furthermore, to provide a lasting solution, the metro has procured eight ventilators, four of which were installed on April 26,” said Gadebe.

“The service contract will run for a period of three years, from 2018 to 2020, comprising of two services per year.”

Mahonko said the Lala Ngoxolo Cemetery is the only crematorium operated by the Ekurhuleni metro.

Residents who wish to make use of the crematorium can contact the cemetery officer on 011 999 7460, on weekdays from 8am to 3pm.
