Come drum with Sibikwa to celebrate Africa Month

Sibikwa is celebrating Africa Month on Sunday (May 6) and they want you to join in on the celebratory workshops.

“We are offering you the opportunity to explore the wondrous rhythms of our amazing continent with an interactive drumming experience,” said social media officer, Kgomotso Mashilo.

Traditionally, the drum was the heartbeat of most African communities and has been an intrinsic part of African life for countless generations, an ancient instrument used to celebrate all the aspects of life.

“On the other side, drums are all about communication and making music, two essential characteristics of community life,” Mashilo said.

Live in the Beat offers workshops and response sessions for aspirant and more experienced drummers.

All of this will be led by master drummers such as Volley Nchabeleng, Thokozani Nsibande and The Drumming Guys.

Also on the menu is an African drum and dance workshop by choreographer Oscar Buthelezi.

“Late afternoon will see all our participants taking to the stage to show off their body percussion, African dance and Sepedi drumming learned during the day,” Mashilo said.

“It is just pure, uninhibited, joyous music making and dancing to the sound of the African drum and its infectious, primal beat and rhythms.”

The workshop will take place at Sibikwa Arts Centre, corner of Liverpool Road and Bolton Streets from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

Tickets (including the use of a drum) are R40 at the door.
