Metro credits Rynfield man’s account with roughly R45 000

Have you recently checked your utilities bill?

After a lengthy dispute with the Ekurhuleni metro, a Rynfield resident’s account was credited in the region of R45 000.

Murray Vinnicombe last year approached the City Times to assist him, as he had been charged an exorbitant amount for water usage at his Sarel Cilliers Street home.

He represented his water and electricity bills from January 2016 in a table and graph.

His figures showed the following kilolitres:

• January (279), February (828), March (28), April (42), May (105), June (33), July (57), August (44) September (197) and October (44).

“Do you have any concept of what 828kl amount to in a month?” Vinnicombe said at the time of pointing out the 828kl amount.

This reading was valued at R23 567.98.

After the City Times channelled the complaint to the metro, Vinnicombe’s account was finally credited a month ago.

He said his interpretation of the false reading should equate to an additional R10 000 to R12 000 of credit.

However, he said he is not going to quibble, despite his desire to question the principle.

Vinnicombe said people need to scrutinise their statements, as his case proves people are being overcharged and that unless the amounts are queried, extra charges will not be rectified.
