Benny Mafoka (37), Shakes Basetswana (26) and Matter Maphapha (28) were found guilty.

Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube said the three men opened a false case on December 5, 2016.

The three said they were robbed of their belongings on Kerk Street, Putfontein.

“Mafoka, Basetswana and Maphapha were working for a courier company at the time and they staged a fake armed robbery and hijacking,” said Ramaube.

“Someone who witnessed the incident alerted the police of what happened.”

Ramaube said police investigated and the men were arrested later the same day.

Putfontein SAPS station commander Lt Col Wellington Mathiane commended branch commander Rajanderan Chetty and Det Sgt Simon Mosako for a job well on the case.

The sentences will be served at Modderbee Prison.
