Member of the EFF, Lebogang Nkadimeng said they want their registration fee (R1 270) back as it was announced that students from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges should get free education.

“The registration fee is a burden for some students assisted by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and not everyone can afford it,” said Nkadimeng.

Nthabiseng Ntsweni of the PAC said students haven’t received their stipend from NSFAS since last year January.

“How do they expect us to come to school when we don’t have transport money and on top of that they want us to pay for registration?” asked Ntsweni.

Ntsweni said they were addressed by the college management earlier today, however, their response wasn’t clear and there will be another meeting for clarification.

The Benoni SAPS, together with the EMPD and Public Order Police (POP) are monitoring the situation.

Classes for the day were cancelled.
