UPDATE: Daveyton housing issue to receive attention

More meetings will be held.

The Ekurhuleni metro will hold regular meetings with Daveyton community leaders to address issues of land.

In the evening of April 15 and morning of April 16, several roads in Daveyton were blocked with rocks.

Residents were said to be protesting against apparent unfair housing allocation.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the MMC for human settlements in the metro, Clr Lesiba Mpya, has had meetings with backyard dwellers.

He said the last meeting was held on March 14.

Gadebe said it was decided at that meeting to resuscitate the Daveyton Backyard Dwellers forum and to have regular meetings.

“Each association will have to submit five delegates to attend meetings,” said Gadebe.

“Meetings will be held quarterly.

“The forum established will deal with matters related to land, backyard dwellers and housing development in Daveyton and Etwatwa.”

The spokesperson said backyard dwellers will still benefit from housing projects identified, for example, Daveyton Extension 14 and Chief Albert Luthuli Extension Four as agreed.
