Strong wind leaves New Modder orphanage damaged

Any help towards the roofing is needed.

The rain and wind on April 10 left 16 people sleeping in two rooms at an orphanage in New Modder.

“I was at work when one of the boys who live with me called to say there was a strong wind,” said the owner of the Tsidis Children’s Home, Theodora Mokoena.

Mokoena, who is fondly known by community members as Zohra, said the zinc roof broke, causing all 16 people who live in her house to sleep in two bedrooms.

“We need new roofing,” she said.

“The ceiling, which covered my room and another room where six boys sleep, broke.”

The home, which is situated at 26 Telmond Avenue, was further damaged when the rain came through the open roof into the bedrooms which had no covering.

Mokoena said she lives in the house with her children, grandchildren and 11 children who she takes care of.

“Seven of the children attend school,” she said.

The children, who are now all sharing two rooms with Mokoena and her family, range between the ages of two to 20 years old.

If anyone would like to help Mokoena, she can be contacted on 083 478 5567.
