EMPD willing to continue policing Northerns pool

Some days the Benoni Northerns Swimming Pool faces noise, other days they don't.

If you are facing the struggle of ongoing noise at the Benoni Northerns Swimming Pool, the EMPD is asking community members to contact them.

Northmead resident Joanne van Tonder said she appreciates the EMPD monitoring the situation, but is searching for a permanent solution.

“Saturday afternoon (March 24) the EMPD were visible at Benoni Northerns Swimming Pool – there were no problems, it was very quiet,” she said.

Van Tonder made contact with the City Times because she has been bothered by the issues outside the pool for about two years.

“Why are these problems being experienced at Benoni Northerns every weekend and not necessarily at the other public pools?” she asked.

“I have complaints and reports dating back to 2016, yet there has been no permanent solution.”

On March 16, van Tonder said around 5pm there was music coming from a taxi which was parked at the entrance of the pool.

“Some occupants danced and screamed. The taxi only left at 5.30pm,” she said.

On Saturday she said it was fairly quiet during the day possibly due to the cold weather, but at 7.10pm, a taxi arrived again.

“The radio was blaring and the taxi hung around for a while and then left,” van Tonder said.

“It was dark so I could not see what was going on.”

Van Tonder said the pool will close for winter, but said when it reopens, it will be back to seven months of irritation and complaints.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgsago said the precinct commander has made arrangements with the supervisors at the pool to report issues as they arise.

“It is not always possible to statically deploy officers, but periodic monitoring of the location will be conducted,” he said.

Members of the public can also call the EMPD emergency number on 011 458 0911.
