Take note of this information ahead of Easter break

Always be alert of your surroundings

With the Easter holidays fast approaching, police provided some tips that one should keep in mind.

For your house:

• If you are going away on holiday, ensure all your external house doors and gates are locked and your windows closed.

• Switch off unnecessary switches such as those linked to the television. Also, switch off your geyser.

• Remove all post and newspapers from your post box and get someone you trust to continue removing them while you are away.

• Do not leave lights on.

• Remember to activate your alarm system. If you do not have an alarm system, have one installed if possible.

• Do not tell everyone that you won’t be home; tell someone you trust.

SAPS tips: know what to do when faced with car hijackers

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele said shopping centres are busy at this time of year. While you may be in a rush to finish your shopping, you must be alert at all times.

As you do you’re shopping:

• Don’t carry large sums of cash; rather swipe one of your bank cards when shopping instead.

• Don’t carry your cellphone and wallet in your back pocket.

• Ensure that you have all your belongings before leaving a store.

• Report suspicious people, behaviour or situations to mall security.

• Don’t leave valuables in trolleys and be careful of scams where strangers stand in passageways and offer you discounts on goods found in shops.

ATM safety:

• Always cover your pin by shielding the hand that is typing even if you are alone at an ATM.

• Never accept help or ask anyone to assist you. Rather go inside the bank for help.

• Never make large cash withdrawals.

• If you see somebody suspicious lingering at an ATM, walk away.

• If anything suspicious happens, cancel the request and leave.
