UPDATE: Police officers charged for Mercury Street bribery expected to reappear in May

The two constables are out on bail.

Two police officers, who have been charged with corruption, extortion and intimidation, will reappear in court on May 8.

According to Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele, it is alleged that the two constables stopped a man who was in a motor vehicle on Mercury Street because they suspected he was in possession of drugs.

“The man said the police asked him if he knew how much he would be expected to pay if he were arrested,” she said.

According to the statement, the policemen said he would pay R4 500, but they offered to let him go if he paid a bribe.

Sekele said the man agreed to the bribe and withdrew the cash (R3 000).

However, the police were cornered and arrested on the corner of Sixth Street and Second Avenue by the Crime Prevention Unit and CPF members.

The constables are out on bail.
