SPCA probing case of dog allegedly beaten to death

The SPCA will not shy away from laying these charges - Shiven Bodasing

“Our officers have seen quite a bit, but this shook them,” said Benoni SPCA inspector Shiven Bodasing, who exhumed the carcass of a dog that was allegedly beaten to death by a minor.

Bodasing said he is in the process of opening three cases of animal cruelty against the youngster and his mother.

The concern of animal cruelty was brought to the attention of the SPCA on March 5 which was followed by a visit from Bodasing.

“We visited the premises in Northmead and were told by the parents and child (15) that they returned home and found the dog dead,” Bodasing said.

“But I did not believe this story so I began taking statements from neighbours.”

Bodasing said the statements of the witnesses were consistent, but differed from the mother’s statement.

“I applied for a warrant and revisited the house on March 9,” Bodasing said.

“The mother then admitted that her son was home prior to their return and had beaten the dog.”

According to the mother, this was not the first time her son has killed an animal.

“She said a few months before that, her son beat a cat to death, using a broom, and then hid the cat in her cupboard,” he said.

In a post on the Benoni SPCA’s Facebook page, Bodasing said they uncovered the body of the dog from a shallow grave where the animal had been buried.

The body was exhumed and sent to a vet for the post-mortem, but Bodasing did not have the results readily available at the time of speaking to the City Times on Monday morning.

“The Benoni SPCA will be working with social welfare authorities to ensure that the minor is evaluated and the necessary steps are taken,” he said in the post.

Bodasing said the body of the Pekingese dog was cremated on March 10.
