Man killed in Benoni taxi shooting

The motive is unknown.

A 49-year-old taxi owner was fatally wounded in Daveyton this morning (March 25).

The incident happened at a taxi rank on the corner of Eiselen and Turton streets, at about 5.30am.

Capt Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the police’s Ekurhuleni Central Cluster, said the deceased would sometimes drive his own taxis.

The spokesperson said he was waiting to load passengers when two men entered the vehicle.

“One of them pulled out a gun and shot the taxi owner from behind in the upper body,” said Sekele.

“The suspects then jumped out of the taxi and fled the scene on foot.”

The motive for the killing is unknown.

A man-hunt has been launched by the Taxi Violence Unit.

In a separate incident, a 24-year-old female was arrested in the early hours of this morning for apparently fatally stabbing her boyfriend, in Van Wyk Road, Brentwood Park.

“It is alleged that the two engaged in a fight at their place of residence, when the female suspect took a knife and stabbed her boyfriend,” Sekele said.

He was certified dead on the scene and the suspect has been arrested and detained at the Benoni Police Station.
