The meeting was also attended by representatives of the SAPS, Department of Community Safety and the EMPD.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele confirmed that crime is manageable in the area, however, she said there are still house robberies, common robberies and hijacking’s in the CBD.

“We urge residents to report crime on 10111 and they will receive a reference number,” said Sekele.

“Please report any crime no matter how small it may be, so police are able to make a follow-up or increase visibility in that particular area.”

The SAPS members in attendance thanked the CPF for their assistance.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster CPF chairperson Reza Patel criticised community members for showing little interest in finding solutions to crime, despite constantly complaining about it.

“My disappointment is that the police are criticised for not living up to the community’s expectation, but people don’t take the opportunity to meet them and to ask them questions when we create a platform for them,” said Patel.

He noted that only three members of the community attended the meeting and that the majority of attendees were CPF members.

Patel also mentioned that the SAPS’ Ekurhuleni Central Cluster and the provincial CPF have launched the Sekwanele (It’s Enough) project, which is aimed at facilitating the police’s ongoing engagement with the community in combating crime.

Sekwanele will focus on mobilising the community to take part in policing forums at all stations.

The chairperson urged the community to get involved in the fight against crime by joining the local CPF in any capacity possible.
