Getting to know the Benoni Lions Branch Club

Lions make a difference in the community.

The Benoni Lions Branch Club was founded in 1986 by Masie Brandon, who stood as president of the former Benoryn Lioness Club when it was formed.

The club’s current president, Leslie Young, said when the Lions clubs were founded they were very much driven by men only and the spouses of these Lions were keen to form their own club in support for their husbands.

“The Lioness Club was formed and sponsored by the Benoni van Rhyn Lions Club,” said Young.

“As times have changed, with ladies increasingly becoming inducted as Lions, the Lioness clubs have slowly closed down over the years.”

“The Benoryn Lioness Club members eventually agreed to step over in August 2016 and became a branch Lions Club for the Benoni van Rhyn Lions Club,” said Young.

When asked what the purpose of the club is, Young said: “Every community has a need for volunteers to help those less fortunate.”

“Lions Clubs are members of an international organisation which helps millions of people every year whether by feeding schemes, aid for the sight- and hearing-impaired, friendly smiles and hugs and an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on or in disaster relief,” she said.

“The Lions Club International has celebrated its centenary year last year, which is no mean feat and we’re all very proud to be a part of this wonderful organisation.”

Young said the club supports the Benoni Salvation Army with the odd appliance donation and food, Ikhaya da Luz (Foster Home) in Benoni, they also offer bi-monthly food donations to the Las Vegas Day Care Centre in Etwatwa and the Fairleads Old-Age Home with bingo games in conjunction with Benoni van Rhyn.

The club currently has 12 members.

“Anyone who has a heart for helping others is welcome to join,” added young.
