Mabhayo said educators do at times resort to corporal punishment out of frustration, as children do not always respond to conventional disciplinary measures.

Journalists Penelope Masilela and Sheina Razack spoke to Mabhayo on Wednesday (March 14), when he admitted that educators do hit learners, but that there is a willingness from staff members to change their ways.

Mabhayo said it is not the first time learners have been smacked, but that it is not something the school encourages.

According to him, teachers get frustrated by learners who refuse to obey school rules and as a result they resort to punishing the learners physically.

Mabhayo said he has accepted that what he has done is wrong and the acting head said his own actions have shocked him, but that he will never hit a child again.
