The appearance is for a bail application after the constables appeared on March 14 and 15. They have been remanded in custody.

According to the Benoni SAPS spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele, it is alleged that the two constables stopped a man who was in a motor vehicle on Mercury Street because they suspected he was in possession of drugs.

“The man said the police asked him if he knew how much he would be expected to pay if he were arrested,” she said.

According to the statement, the policeman said he would pay R4 500 but offered to let him go for a bribe.

Sekele said the man agreed to the bribe and withdrew the cash (R3 000).

However, the police were cornered and arrested on the corner of Sixth Street and Second Avenue by the Crime Prevention Unit and CPF members.
