Women are not alone during labour

Labour tips for women by women.

Going into labour and handling the pain is not always an easy task, but Rynfield resident Tracy Hannah, who is a doula, will take the necessary steps to ensure that there is only a positive feeling when going into labour.

“My company falls under the Women Offering Mothers Birth Support (Wombs) umbrella,” Hannah said.

“In Boksburg, Benoni and Kempton Park we have about nine doulas who assist women,” she said.

Hannah said she doesn’t charge a fee when assisting women in government hospitals.

However, a fee is charged in some cases of assistance in private hospitals because a few medical aids recognise the service provided.

“I provide non-medicated relief,” she said.

“My service includes breathing exercises, yoga and using a rebozo, among others.”

If women prefer the assistance of a fellow woman during their labour, Hannah meets the parent/s about 26 to 28 weeks into the pregnancy to ensure that they feel a sense of comfort around her and vice versa. This is also to ensure that they are happy to have her around at this auspicious moment.

“It is a beautiful journey to bring your child into the world,” she said.

“I never book more than one woman who is due in a month because they could go into labour at any time,” she said.

Hannah said as part of her service to these women, she visits the woman before they go into labour, while she is at home during contraction surges, at the hospital until the baby is born and visits once after the baby is born.

“If the new mothers want me to assist during postpartum then that is considered as a different agreement,” she said.
